Textile Wall Art: The Inspiration Behind the Latest Collection

By May 7th, 2023No Comments2 min read

There is something deeply satisfying about taking a blank piece of fabric and transforming it into a work of art.

Creating textile art comes from a deep appreciation for nature and a desire to create unique pieces that bring joy and beauty to people’s lives. Art has the power to uplift and inspire, and my goal is to create pieces that evoke a sense of wonder and connection to the world around us.

When it comes to art expression, truth is, I have always been drawn to the tactile nature of textiles, and combining my love of painting with the textures and colors of fabric creates a unique and compelling medium. My latest textile art collection reflects these fondness in its true form.

The inspiration behind the ‘Adrinka’ collection stems from my African heritage. Adinkra symbols were designed by the Akan people from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana during the early 1800s. The Asante people of Ghana use adinkra to express the connection between the verbal and the visual in Akan culture. The symbols appear on wooden prestige objects, jewelry, brass weights and, most prominently, as two-dimensional stamped designs ornamenting cloth; expressing deeply symbolic proverbs related to life, wisdom, and human behavior.

The Adrinka collection includes four carefully selected art that were sketched and hand-painted onto natural cotton canvas. Translating these symbols into art pieces was a mindful and reflective process. ‘Abe Dua’ for example, represents the Palm Tree which symbolizes resourcefulness, wealth, and self-sufficiency –  due of the sheer number of practical uses one can find for products made from the palm tree’s wood, oil and fruit. Art has more meaning than we can ever imagine and I believe in capturing the true essence of the world in my work, and invite a sense of optimism, calm and tranquility.

My overall goal is to create pieces that are both visually striking and texturally interesting that not only enhance the aesthetic of any space, but also serve as a sustainable, functional, and timeless element of decor and most importantly, to bring beauty and joy to people’s lives.
